Review: Chrome, the Sweet 16 Web Browser?

Chrome’s a little slower, but still faster than the rest and it’s still the browser to beat.

Say hello to Chrome 16: Google's lastest browser.

Say hello to Chrome 16: Google’s latest browser.

Mozilla, bless its heart, keeps trying to make Firefox relevant again with its speedy update schedule, but it just hasn’t been working out. Google, on the other hand, with its new Chrome sweet 16 release keeps getting better than ever. Read More »

Google Chrome extension lets you bypass Facebook news apps

Are you tired of dealing with Facebook news apps? Here’s a Google Chrome extension that lets you bypass them and go straight to the article at its original source.

Millions of Facebook users have already embraced the Open Graph for reading and sharing news. Technology geeks and nerds, such as ZDNet readers, however, don’t like Facebook Open Graph news apps, noting they have major problems. Thankfully, there’s a solution out there, at least for Google Chrome users, which lets you skip all the nonsense. Read More »

Google Chrome Extension Tells You Not To Shop at Amazon

Google Chrome users can download a new extension called “Amazon, Huh?” When shopping online, the extension will tell you different reasons why you shouldn’t buy from Amazon.

Check it out: “With their controversial ‘Price Check’ app, Amazon.com announced it would pay customers up to $5 to go into a local store, scan an item, walk out, and buy the same item on Amazon. So this Chrome extension reminds you — every time you land on Amazon.com — to get off your computer and buy a book in person.” Read More »

Chrome Extension Brings Rotten Tomatoes and Netflix Together

When it comes to picking movies to watch on Netflix, I rely heavily on the ratings that other people give them. I’m not a fan of the 5-star rating system used by Netflix, but love the system used by Rotten Tomatoes.

I mostly browse for movies to add to my Netflix queue on the Netflix site itself, so to find out more information about recommended movies, I have to copy and paste to Google it, search on Rotten Tomatoes, or use a service like Moviegr.am before I make the decision to watch it later. Read More »

Is Chrome Really the Most Secure Browser?

If you were asked to rate browsers according to security, what order would you put them? Well, a study by Accuvant Labs rated Google Chrome first, with Microsoft Internet Explorer second and Firefox pulling up third. According to ZDNet, the study focused on a few key areas directly related to browser security, including the integration of sandboxing, plug-in security, JIT hardening, ASLR, DEP, GS and URL blacklisting.

But is the study trustworthy? It turns out that the Accuvant Labs study was commissioned by Google. Chrome does have its strengths, but you do have to wonder if everything is on the up and up. Alan Shimel made a comment on his blog at Network World that addressed that concern: Read More »

Google Dev: We Are Making Chrome Out of Kindness to Web

There has been plenty of speculation about Google’s motivation to guarantee Mozilla nearly $1 billion in a 3-year advertising contract that covers the search box in Firefox.

The obvious idea behind this move is Google’s interest in capturing those advertising revenues generated by Mozilla’s 25 percent browser market share and users who are using the box for Google searches. Some rumors suggest that the price for Firefox went up as Microsoft was bidding for the space as well and Google certainly has no interest to handing those search revenues to Bing. Read More »

Google Chrome’s success has Microsoft planning silent updates

The growth of Google Chrome may have finally pushed Microsoft into releasing silent updates for Internet Explorer.

Microsoft has a problem with web users going “stale” by failing to update their web browsers until they come to change their whole operating system, which doesn’t happen very often.

Data from StatCounter shows just what Microsoft is up against with rival Google Chrome, which utilises silent updates.

StatCounter notes that within five days of introduction, Chrome 15 market share plummeted from 24.06 per cent to 6.38 per cent, while Chrome 16 share rocketed from 0.35 per cent to 19.81 per cent. Read More »

Chrome Beats Rival Browsers in 2011

Google’s Chrome 15 has jumped into the number one spot, replacing Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) as the world’s most popular browser edition.

Ireland-based StatCounter announced the passing of the baton last week, citing data from the last three weeks that put Chrome 15 ahead of IE8 starting the week of November 21.

It was the first time that IE8 had not held the top spot since early 2010, when it replaced IE7 as the most-widely-used browser, and the first time a non-Microsoft application has led the list in StatCounter’s tracking. Read More »

Google Books for Chrome gets offline support, one less excuse for not reading the ‘classics’

So, you can read all those tomes you’ve picked up through Google Books offline on your smartphone and tablet, but what about on your laptop? Well, if for some reason you’ve got the desire to power through Finnegans Wake in your browser (though, we’re not really sure why you’d do that to yourself) we’ve got good news — the Google Books app for Chrome now caches your titles for local reading. To download a book, just hover over the cover in library view and select “make available offline” from the pop-up. Then, even when you can’t get your Chromebook connected, you’ll be able to sit back and relax with a classic novel or seedy romance tale. Read More »
